Starting out as a ‘man with a van’ he quickly gained a good reputation and embarked on a longstanding relationship with Harrods. He was later joined by his wife, Caroline Wallrock. Caroline having completed a Persian degree, went on to study at Christie’s fine art and then joined Sotheby’s specializing in Islamic and Japanese works of art, as well as taking the occasional auction. Together they make a formidable team with extensive knowledge and buy and sell some of the best items on the market.

A painted porcelain portrait of Field Marshal Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts, shown wearing full uniform and orders. English, c1910. Footnote: Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts, (30 September 1832 – 14 November 1914) was one of the most successful British military commanders of the 19th century. He served in the Indian rebellion, the Expedition to Abyssinia and the Second Anglo-Afghan War before leading British Forces to success in the Second Boer War. He also became the last Commander-in-Chief of the Forces before the post was abolished in 1904. Roberts was awarded the Victoria Cross as was his son, Frederick Hugh Sherston Roberts, who died in 1899 in the second Boer War. They were one of only three father and son pairs to receive the Victoria Cross. This lot comes with a facsimile copy of the book
