Description
Circle of Martin van Meytens (Swedish-Austrian 1695-1770), A pair of early 18th-century French school enamel on copper portrait miniatures of Sir William and Lady Penelope Wheler, circa 1730, set in 22ct (electronically (Kee) tested) gold clasp mounts with mother of pearl verso. We doubt that either was ever incorporated into a bracelet, brooch, or pendant, given the outstanding condition. Provenance: By family descent to the previous owner. Born in Leamington-Hastings, co. Warwick, England, Sir William married Penelope Glynne in 1726, moving to Paris from Warwickshire a few years later with their young family. It is assumed that this pair of enamels were painted while they were there, it being highly fashionable to have portraits painted in enamels in the first half of the eighteenth century. Many fine enamelists were working in Paris at the time. Their style links these to the circle of Martin van Meytens (1695-1770). He moved from London to France in 1714 before moving to Italy and then Austria.
