Pair of Chippendale Period Mahogany Gainsborough Arm Chairs

No: 11056 An exceptional PAIR of mid-18th. Century Mahogany Gainsborough Chairs, the arched backs flanked by shaped, scrolled, moulded and carved arms and terminals, the saddle shaped seats raised on square section chamfered legs united by an “H” stretcher. Note: There are numerous examples of this model of chair referred to by Chippendale as “French Chairs” and pieces by him often have the identical arm terminals with the carved inner and outer scrolls. The “H” shaped stretcher is also often seen on Chippendale’s own examples. Literature: Thomas Chippendale, “The Gentleman & Cabinet-Makers Director”, 3rd. edition, plate XIX.
