To the Georgians a chair was not just a place to sit but was the pinnacle of fashion and style also. There were simple hall chairs for the servants, beautifully carved dining chairs for the table and wide baffled armchairs for the lounge. It was also the era when specialist chairs such as Library Chairs became popular. While the practical hall chairs would remain austere and limited to simple classical carving or painted details, chairs for the family or guests were wide seated, elegantly proportioned and in the case of dining chairs had sweeping fretwork and carved backs and arms which sported interlocking ribbons or stylised wheatsheafs. Cabriole legs were common and lions paw on ball carved feet added a touch of the Orient. When it came to comfy lounge armchairs these too were often well padded and elegantly shaped. When looking at Georgian chairs then it is good to remember that the best were constructed in Mahogany and many firms copied (or modified) the designs found in the popular book by Chippendale, Sheraton, Hepplewhite and others. There is always a sense of quality in Georgian chairs, so much so that the designs have been reproduced even through to today.
