Description
Gentleman's antique Swiss 'Cortebert' high grade 15 jewel pocket watch with beautiful ivory porcelain dial in a very chunky 16 size silver nickel case. It looks to have been much loved and very well taken care of - her condition certainly reflects this. Full working order and is an excellent timekeeper (within +2/-2 minutes per 24 hours) with plenty of room on the regulator (which is sat correctly in the central position) for any further fine tuning. Fully checked, serviced and a new mainspring fitted by my highly experienced watchmaker and is guaranteed to be 100% authentic - a timepiece to grace any collection! Dial;- Impressive and distinctive, high gloss, 'snowflake' white porcelain dial in mint condition - absolutely no hairlines, marks or nibbles. Clearly signed in black very fancy script; Cortebert, with; ANTI MAGNETIC in arched script above the sub dial and; SWISS MADE in arched black script to base of dial. Bold black Arabic numbers (note the lovely little arrow tip to number 4) with black minute markers, bolder black triangular shaped 5 minute markers and 'diamond' shaped black 15 minute markers to chapter ring. Recessed slightly textured sub dial with black Arabic numbers and black seconds chapters. Finely cut, original bright blued steel spade and whip hands and blued steel arrow tip seconds hand all in lovely straight order. New old stock (will be as old as the watch) very thick domed glass (not acrylic) in clear and bright condition. Case;- The highly polished and very chunky silver nickel 16 size case (4.9cm diameter / 6.8cm from top of bow to base, 1.5cm depth) is heavy (has a pleasing solid feel in the hand and total watch weight is 81 grams), robust and in wonderful condition (please excuse the reflections/dark shadows in the pictures, was extremely difficult to photograph) - absolutely no wear, just one extremely small indentation to back cover (so tiny is not showing up in the photographs, only visible in certain light but mentioning for accuracy) and just a few light overall little surface scratches (usually caused by carrying the watch in a pocket with other heavy objects jangling around) commensurate with age and use in her 100+ years service. These robust silver nickel cases where favoured by Railway men for their strength and durability. All covers (both inside and out) still retain their original, high gloss, mirror finish. The front bezel and back cover snap on and off correctly and are an extremely good, tight fit. The inside of the back cover carries the most wonderful 'fishscale' engine turning which is as bright and crisp as the day it was made. Clearly stamped; SWISS MADE and numbered; 2686086 5413. Also carries an old service mark which looks to be dated; 55 (1955). Movement;- The stem wound and set high grade 15 ruby jewelled, 3/4 plate Swiss lever movement is in clean and bright order (micro bit of very light patina to the mainspring barrel cover showing under eyeglass only) and as mentioned above has just been checked/serviced and a new mainspring fitted by my highly experienced watch maker. Carries very attractive geometric engine turning to the top plates - again the detail of which remains as crisp and clear today as the day they were made. Has a solid bi-arm balance with brass balance screws and two brass meantime screws (for precision timing), steel balance spring which is true, in the round and 'breathing' well, large ruby jewels in red gold sunken chaton settings, ruby end stone, white sapphire pallet jewels (they are more commonly ruby), correct Cortebert 'dog leg' regulator, attractive 'swirl' engine turning to the mainspring and ratchet barrel covers and original, matching highly polished bevel edge steel case screws. Stamped clearly on the top plates in arched yellow gold script; SWISS MADE 15 JEWELS CAL.534 and is beautifully stamped around the mainspring barrel cover; CORTEBERT ***. Balance action is tremendous in all positions (could not be any better) and is keeping excellent time with a sure, strong positive action - runs like a train. Winds extremely smoothly and fully (do not be afraid to fully wind, over-winding is the greatest horological myth!) Hand set operates smoothly and correctly - the pull up/push down action is very firm and true. Lovely original crisp un-worn big 'onion' crown. Original large, firm and totally un-worn bow. Appraisal;- A very handsome and highly impressive Gentleman's Swiss timepiece - she will make a perfect gift and a heirloom to be enjoyed by your future generations! Ready to wear or display. Will be delivered in a new presentation box as shown and be very securely and safely packed.
