Description

Gentleman's Antique Kay's "Screwback" Lever, high grade Swiss 15 jewel Railway type pocket watch with beautiful ivory porcelain dial in a very chunky 16 size solid silver nickel hermetic case.
Looks to have been much loved and very well taken care of - her condition certainly reflects this.
Full working order and is an excellent timekeeper which has been fully checked / serviced and a new mainspring fitted by my highly experienced watchmaker (82 years old) - guaranteed to be 100% authentic, a timepiece to grace any collection!
Dial;-
Impressive and distinctive, high gloss, 'snowflake' white porcelain dial in mint condition - absolutely no hairlines, marks or nibbles.
Clearly signed in black very fancy script; KAY'S "SCREWBACK" LEVER, with; SWISS MADE in arched black script to base of dial.
Big black Roman numerals with black minute markers and bolder black 5 minute markers to chapter ring.
Large sub dial with black Arabic numbers and black seconds chapters.
Finely cut, original bright blued steel spade and whip hands and blued steel arrow tip seconds hand all in lovely straight order.
Original thick bevel edge glass (not acrylic) showing some overall little surface scratches and 'flea nibbles' commensurate with age (was tempted to change it for a new glass but decided it would not be in keeping with the watch).
Case;-
The highly polished and very chunky solid silver nickel 16 size case (5.2cm diameter / 7.4cm from top of bow to base, 1.2cm depth) is heavy (has a pleasing solid feel in the hand and total watch weight is a hefty 109.5 grams), robust and in wonderful condition (please excuse the reflections/dark shadows in the pictures, was extremely difficult to photograph) - absolutely no wear, just one extremely small pin prick indentation to back cover (so tiny is not showing up in the photographs, only visible in certain light but mentioning for accuracy) and just a few light overall little surface scratches (usually caused by carrying the watch in a pocket with other heavy objects jangling around) commensurate with age and use in her 100+ years service.
These robust silver nickel cases where favoured by Railway men for their strength and durability.
All covers (both inside and out) still retain their original, high gloss, mirror finish.
The front bezel and back cover screw on and off correctly (hermetic), closing tightly and I have taken the liberty of oiling the threads for years of continuous smooth operation.
Both covers carry a milled coin edge making for an easy grip.
The inside of the back cover is clearly numbered; 2749836 and carries an old service mark which looks to be dated; 54 (1954).
Movement;-
The stem wound and set high grade 15 ruby jewelled, 3/4 plate Swiss lever movement is in clean and bright order (micro bit of very light overall patina showing under eyeglass only) and as mentioned above has just been checked/serviced and a new mainspring fitted by my highly experienced watch maker.
Carries very attractive geometric engine turning to the top plates - the detail of which remains as crisp and clear today as the day they were made.
Has a solid bi-arm balance with brass balance screws and four brass meantime screws (for precision timing), steel balance spring which is true, in the round and 'breathing' well, large ruby jewels in sunken chaton settings, ruby end stone, ruby pallet jewels, attractive 'swirl' engine turning to the mainspring and ratchet barrel covers and original, matching highly polished steel case screws.
Stamped clearly on the top plates in arched black script; KAY & Co. LTD. SWISS MADE.
Balance action is tremendous in all positions (could not be any better) and is keeping excellent time with a sure, strong positive action - runs like a train.
Winds extremely smoothly and fully (do not be afraid to fully wind, over-winding is the greatest horological myth!)
Hand set operates smoothly and correctly - the pull up/push down action is very firm and true.
Lovely original crisp big brass 'onion' crown.
Original large bow.
Appraisal;-
A very handsome and highly impressive Gentleman's Swiss timepiece - she will make a perfect gift and a heirloom to be enjoyed by your future generations!
Ready to wear or display.
Will be delivered in a new presentation box as shown and be very securely and safely packed.
