Description
Gentleman's Antique American 'Rockford Watch Company' high grade 11 jewel pocket watch with beautiful ivory porcelain 'private label' dial in a 12ct (professionally tested) chunky gold filled case.
C~1915.
(Rockford Watch Company was in existence from 1874 - 1915 and were based at 319 - 325 South Madison St., Rockford, Illinois, U.S.A).
Looks to have been much loved and very well taken care of - her condition certainly reflects this.
Full working order and has been recently checked/serviced by my highly experienced watchmaker - guaranteed to be 100% authentic - a timepiece to grace any collection!
Dial:-
Impressive and distinctive, high gloss, ivory porcelain dial in very near mint condition - just one tiny hairline from centre - 11 (so feint is not showing up in the photographs) and two little 'flea nibbles' to centre of dial which do not detract but again mentioning for accuracy.
Clearly signed in black very fancy script; Rockford Watch Co., and has the Retailers initials below; U.P.A.
Bold black Roman numerals with black minute markers, bolder black triangular shaped 5 minute markers and black diamond shaped 15 minute markers to chapter ring.
Large recessed sub dial with black Arabic numbers and black seconds chapters.
Finely cut, original bright blued steel spade and whip hands and blued steel arrow tip seconds hand all in lovely straight order.
Original bevel edge, slightly domed glass (not acrylic) in amazingly clear and bright condition - free from any scratches or marks.
Case:-
The highly polished, chunky 12ct gold filled case (5.3cm diameter / 7.1cm from top of bow to base and 5cm width) is heavy (has a pleasing solid feel in the hand and total watch weight is 98.9 grams), robust and in lovely condition (please excuse the reflections/dark shadows in the pictures, was extremely difficult to photograph) - absolutely no indentations, just a tiny bit of wear to stem only and a few overall light little surface scratches (usually caused by carrying the watch in a pocket with other heavy objects jangling around) commensurate with age and use in her 111 years service.
All covers (both inside and out) still retain their original, high gloss, mirror finish.
The front bezel snaps on and off correctly closing tightly with a very reassuring click.
Both the back cover and dust cover are hinged at the six position, open correctly to exactly 90 degrees, closing tightly and the two hinges are true and firm with absolutely no play.
Clearly stamped to the inside of the back cover (again in very fancy script); Illinois WATCH CASE Co. ELGIN U.S.A (they made cases for all the leading high end watch manufacturers of the era) and is numbered; 1635917.
Also carries four old service marks (certainly looks to have been very well maintained and are all neatly placed to the inner circumference) - 26 (1926) then three all inscribed with the same hand; 37 (1937), 42 (1942) and 48 (1948).
The inside of the dust cover is beautifully stamped; GUARANTEED TO BE MADE OF TWO PLATES OF GOLD WITH PLATE OF COMPOSITION BETWEEN AND TO WEAR 20 YEARS.
Numbered; 1635917 and again carries two old and neatly done service marks; 50 (1950) and 57 (1957).
The case number is correctly repeated to the back case curvette; 1635917.
Movement:-
The stem wound and set high grade 11 ruby jewelled, 3/4 nickel plate lever movement is in superb clean and bright order and as mentioned above has just been checked/serviced by my highly experienced watch maker.
Still retains the original dust cover ring (these are usually long gone).
Carries the most wonderful bright and crisp engine turning to the top plates with a little 'daisy' flower design radiating from the centre wheel pivot and 'fish scale' engine turning to the bottom plate - always a sign of quality.
Has a compensated bi-metal balance with red gold balance screws and four red gold meantime screws (for precision timing), bright blued steel over-coil balance spring which is true, in the round and 'breathing' well, large ruby jewels in red gold sunken chaton settings (all correct screw fit), ruby end stone, ruby pallet jewels, heavily engraved balance cock with swan neck screw adjustment regulator, attractive 'swirl' engine turning to the mirror finish mainspring / ratchet barrel covers and original, matching steel case screws.
Stamped clearly on the top plates in arched black enamelled script; ROCKFORD WATCH Co., and is numbered (again in black); 685365.
Clearly numbered to the bottom plate (under the dial); 685365 and again carries an old service mark dating to 1939.
Balance action is tremendous in all positions (could not be any better) with a sure, strong positive action - runs like a train.
Winds extremely smoothly and fully (do not be afraid to fully wind, over-winding is the greatest horological myth!)
Hand set operates smoothly and correctly - the pull up/push down action is very firm and true.
Original big 'onion' crown and original large bow.
Appraisal;-
A very handsome and highly impressive Gentleman's American timepiece - she will make a perfect gift and a heirloom to be enjoyed by your future generations!
Ready to wear or display.
Will be delivered in a new presentation box as shown and be very securely and safely packed.
