Description
Prince Philip’s Bluebottle and Other Dragon Class Boats at Cowes, Frank Henry Mason, c.1950
This painting in oils on canvas depicts a series of dragon class boats, including the Bluebottle, owned and raced by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, at Cowes during the Regatta, the vessels racing towards the Windward Mark.
Bluebottle was a wedding gift to the future king and queen, given to them by members of the Island Sailing Club on Cowes in 1947. She was built by Camper and Nicholsons in Gosport and the Duke raced her alongside the future King Charles and his sister Princess Anne on occasion. She was also loaned to other serious sailors, none more so than the British Olympic team who used her to win a bronze medal in Melbourne in 1956. She was retired from racing in 1961.
More recently the vessel has been entirely refitted and is winning prizes again at Cowes under new ownership, continuing a fine legacy of racing.
