Description
Rare Georgian Equestrian Armorial Desk Seal c.1770–1800
A finely modelled late-Georgian armorial desk seal in copper alloy, probably brass, formed as the expressive head and neck of a bridled horse.
Dating to the late 18th century, circa 1770–1800, the object combines the practical function of an historic writing accessory with the sculptural qualities of a miniature equestrian work of art.
The horse has raised ears, an open mouth, carefully modelled eyes and nostrils, detailed bridle and bit and an incised mane.
The circular underside contains an engraved intaglio matrix with two shield-shaped cartouches surrounded by elaborate heraldic and foliate ornament.
Historic Association
The seal is traditionally associated by repute with the Abercromby family of Tullibody, Scotland, and historically with Lieutenant-General Sir Ralph Abercromby KB (1734–1801).
Research has established genuine historical context for considering the family connection. Sir Ralph was the son and heir of George Abercromby of Tullibody and married Mary Anne Menzies of Ferntower in 1767.
However, the worn matrix has not yet produced a conclusive match with the recorded Abercromby of Tullibody arms.
The association with Sir Ralph is therefore retained as historic tradition rather than confirmed ownership.
Date
Late 18th century, circa 1770–1800, provisional.
