Description
Lovely oil on canvas portrait depicting a young woman in halflength by unknown artits. Sitter turned slightly in profile while engaging the viewer with a direct, composed gaze.
She wears a delicate lace trimmed bonnet tied with a ribbon, and a soft, high waisted dress characteristic of the Regency period, complemented by a simple ribbon necklace with a small pendant.
Her softly modelled features, pale complexion with warm blush tones, and restrained palette are set against a dark, neutral background, drawing focus to her face and attire.
The painting likely dates to the early 19th Century (circa 1800–1820), reflecting the refined yet understated elegance typical of the period. The execution suggests a competent provincial hand rather than a known academic artist, with attention paid to facial detail and costume, though the handling of the background remains more economical.
Condition is consistent with age and past intervention. The surface shows areas of craquelure throughout, with notable flaking and paint loss and patched areas of canvas. Flaking, particularly visible in the bonnet and dress, where earlier restoration appears to have stabilised but not fully concealed the damage. There are also signs of overpainting and possible retouching, along with a slightly uneven varnish layer contributing to varied surface sheen. The canvas itself appears to have been relined or reinforced at some stage, helping preserve structural integrity.
The work is presented in a later gilt frame, which complements the warm tones of the painting but is not original to the piece.
Frame is 64cm by 74cm
Back of the canvas is 52cm by 61cm
