Description
Richard Harry Carter Antique Cornish Fishing Boat Oil Painting Victorian Marine Scene An original signed British marine oil painting by Richard Harry Carter (1839–1911), depicting a Cornish fisherman removing a hook from his catch. The painting retains a historic exhibition or sale label fragment and has documented auction provenance from 2021 and 2023. Highlights: - Original antique British oil on canvas. - Signed *R. H. Carter*, lower right. - Traditional Cornish fisherman aboard his working boat. - Large fish, wicker basket and detailed fishing equipment. - Atmospheric rough seas and distant sailing vessel. - Artist associated with Cornwall's Newlyn artistic community. - Historic printed label fragment retained verso. - Previously catalogued as *A Fisherman at Work*. - Documented auction appearances at Lay's and Hutchinson Scott. - Later oak frame; framed 90cm × 67cm × 2cm. Introduction: An evocative antique British marine painting portraying the daily occupation of a Cornish fisherman. The composition is distinguished by its carefully observed working figure, traditional fishing equipment and dramatic coastal atmosphere. Catalogue Details: Artist: Richard Harry Carter (1839–1911). Alternative name: Richard Henry Carter. Title: *Fisherman Releasing the Catch*. Earlier auction title: *A Fisherman at Work*. Date: Late 19th to early 20th century; undated. Medium: Original oil on canvas. Signature: Lower right. Subject: Cornish fisherman aboard a traditional fishing boat. Frame: Later oak with gilt-coloured inner slip. Catalogue Note: The painting portrays a bearded fisherman concentrating upon the removal of a curved hook from a substantial fish. He wears a dark broad-brimmed hat, green knitted jersey and red neckerchief. His weathered features and careful handling of the fish convey the practical experience of a working seafarer. Behind the figure, a traditional wicker fishing basket and additional caught fish are visible within the wooden boat. The surrounding sea is choppy, with breaking waves, seabirds and a distant sailing vessel beneath an overcast sky. The painting's strength lies in its combination of detailed figurative observation and the atmosphere of the Cornish maritime environment. Rather than depicting a dramatic rescue or shipwreck, Carter concentrates upon a quieter aspect of fishing life. The sitter's identity and exact coastal setting remain unknown. The Artist – Richard Harry Carter (1839–1911): Richard Harry Carter was born in Truro (Cornwall) in 1839. He developed a reputation for coastal landscapes, maritime scenes and subjects drawn from traditional fishing communities. His works were exhibited at the Royal Academy and Royal Institute of Painters in watercolours. Carter lived in Falmouth during the 1880s and exhibited Shetland subjects in London in 1891. He participated in Newlyn Art Gallery's opening exhibition in 1895. By 1901, he was living with a fisherman and his family at Sennen Cove. During his later career, he increasingly painted in oils and travelled to Holland with Walter Langley in 1904. His paintings are represented in Cornish public collections, including Falmouth Art Gallery and the Royal Cornwall Museum. He died in 1911. Original Signature and Historic Label The painting bears a lower-right signature reading *R. H. Carter*. A fragmentary printed exhibition or sale label survives on the reverse. The label includes fields for exhibitor, address, title and price. Its handwritten details are incomplete. The issuing institution and date have not been identified. Its presence was recorded in the 2021 Lay's auction catalogue. Provenance: Earlier ownership unidentified. Lay's Auctioneers, Penzance, *Cornish Art and Fine Art Sale*, 13 May 2021, Lot 303, *A Fisherman at Work*. Hutchinson Scott Auctioneers, *The Spring Fine Art Catalogue Sale*, March 2023, Lot 1007, *Fisherman Releasing the Catch*. Acquired by Cheshire Antiques Consultant in March 2023. Subsequently recorded within the inventory of Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD®. Original acquisition documentation retained. Exhibition History: The historic label suggests a possible earlier exhibition or gallery-sale association. Its original venue, date and catalogue number remain unconfirmed. Carter exhibited at several prominent British institutions, but no specific exhibition of the present work has yet been documented. Frame and Presentation: Presented in a later traditional oak frame with a gilt-coloured inner slip. The frame has a warm dark finish and age-related surface wear. The wooden stretcher and historic label fragment remain visible on the reverse. Published References: Art UK, *Richard Harry Carter (1839–1911)*. Cornwall Artists Index, *Richard Henry Carter*.
