In 1913 he became Head of Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh College of Art, placing him at the centre of Scottish academic art training. He served during the First World War and was wounded at Gallipoli (1915). Elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1916, he later became a full Academician.
