Description
Original Scottish Oil Portrait of Girl Reading with Teddy Bear – David Alison RSA (1882–1955) Antique Scottish Oil Portrait – David Alison R.S.A., 1914 A refined early 20th-century Scottish oil on canvas portrait, signed and dated 1914 by David Alison RSA (1882–1955). This evocative Edwardian portrait of a young girl reading captures a moment of quiet childhood intimacy: the blonde sitter sits absorbed in her book, with a beloved teddy bear beside her, adding narrative warmth and tenderness. Calm, contemplative, and beautifully observed, it’s a standout example of traditional Scottish portrait painting. Subject & Medium Oil on canvas Signed and dated “David Alison, 1914” A three-quarter seated portrait of a child reading, with teddy bear Strong decorative presence with genuine emotional depth Composition & Technique Alison’s accomplished tonal approach is immediately apparent. The figure is set against a cool, softly modulated ground of greys and muted blue, creating atmosphere and depth while allowing the sitter to emerge with clarity. The white dress is sensitively modelled in warm creams and silvery shadows, avoiding flat colour and giving real weight to the fabric. A deep crimson sash and trim introduce warmth and rhythm, drawing the eye back to the child’s face. Her hair is rendered in luminous ivory and honeyed highlights, while the flesh tones—soft rose and peach—are layered with impressive subtlety, producing lifelike softness and youthful vitality. The relationship between face, open book and teddy bear forms a gentle visual pathway, giving the work its quiet narrative charm. About the Artist – David Alison RSA (1882–1955) David Alison was among Scotland’s most respected early 20th-century portrait painters, admired for disciplined drawing and tonal control. Born in Dysart, Fife, he studied at the Glasgow School of Art and later travelled on the Continent, absorbing Old Master influence. In 1913 he became Head of Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh College of Art, placing him at the centre of Scottish academic art training. He served during the First World War and was wounded at Gallipoli (1915). Elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1916, he later became a full Academician. His portraits remain sought after—particularly early dated child portraits such as this. Historical Importance Dated 1914, this portrait was painted at the close of the Edwardian era, immediately before the First World War reshaped society. It preserves a sense of domestic calm and innocence from a pivotal moment in British history, making it especially appealing to collectors of Edwardian art, Scottish portraiture, and early 20th-century oil paintings. Frame Presented in a substantial period decorative gilt frame, richly ornamented and well suited to the painting. Excellent wall presence.
