Sir Thomas Lawrence (13 April 1769 - 7 January 1830) was an English portrait painter and collector. He was the finest portrait painter of his generation in Europe and the last English inheritor of the legacy of van Dyck. His technical facility and rapid and enormous public success should not obscure the originality and self-consciousness of his imagination. He also formed a superb collection of Old Master drawings. He was a member of the Royal Academy of Arts and became its fourth president in 1820.
