Description
Overview An original watercolour on artist-quality paper by Charles Frederick Tunnicliffe (1901–1979), executed circa the 1950s. The painting depicts a Song Thrush perched on a flowering branch captured in mid-song. The sheet is monogrammed “CT” in the lower margin, consistent with authenticated mid-century examples from the artist. Subject & Significance Tunnicliffe is among the foremost British wildlife artists of the twentieth century; this work exemplifies his mature synthesis of scientific observation and refined composition. The Song Thrush is rendered as both an ornithological study and an accomplished decorative work — a desirable addition for collectors of British natural history art. Composition & Technique Vertical composition emphasising the bird with a diagonally placed flowering branch for seasonal context. Layered translucent washes for volume and tonal depth, with precise pen/brush linework and dry-brush feather and bark detail. Restrained natural palette: warm browns, soft greys and delicate blossom tones. Monogrammed “CT”; handling, palette and compositional approach align with the artist’s authenticated period work. Provenance & Exhibition Early private ownership in Lancashire. Sold at Rogers Jones & Co, The Welsh Sale, Cardiff — Lot 224. Exhibited at the Famous Lord Hill Museum, Shropshire (January 2026). Curated and marketed by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD. Original auction and exhibition labels remain on the verso and will be supplied with the sale. Framing & Presentation Period-appropriate later oak frame with cream double mount and subtle line inlay. Professionally backed and secured; ready to hang. Original verso labels retained. Dimensions Framed: 46.0 cm (H) × 40.0 cm (W) × 1.5 cm (D) Visible painting: 25.0 cm (H) × 22.0 cm (W) Why buy Museum-quality workmanship by a Royal Academician.
