Description
We present for consideration, this superb fusee wall clock with 12” dial, by well-known master clockmaker John Foulkes Lowe, of 13 Bridge Street (East Row), Chester.
Born in Chester 1837, Lowe came from a renown and successful clockmaking family, and after ‘serving his time’ under his father (George), Lowe qualified as a registered clockmaker and goldsmith in c1856, before eventually taking over clock production from his father. By c1875, John Lowe’s 3 x sons had all passed their apprenticeships under him, and as such, Lowe changed the business name to “Lowe & Sons” and acquired an additional retail outlet used as a Jewellery shop, at 6 Bridge Street, Chester. His sons were; John (Jr), George, and Henry, Lowe.
• Turned roundhead face and boxed cabinet is made of deeply grained Mahogany.
• Hinged inspection door located on the side of the box.
• Turn-catch hinged regulator door to the bottom of the box.
• Original metal dial with black Roman numerals and Lowe’s details.
• Original pair of blued spade hands, secured with a pinned collet.
• Thick glaze mounted in a brass bezel.
• High-quality 8-day single fusee chain driven movement set between 4mm thick shouldered plates and knopped pillars.
• Comes with its original 75mm diameter brass pendulum bob and a brass winding key.
The Lowe family clockmaking dynasty lasted into the mid-1930’s, at which time their expanding jewellery business operation became the family’s sole commercial focus. Indeed, the jewellery brand “Lowe & Sons…” still exists today in Bridge Street, Chester (although it’s no longer under Lowe family ownership).
…A well-proportioned mid-Victorian timepiece of excellent order and quality!
