Description
A truly imposing and striking watercolour of a Venetian scene detailing three Gondoliers on the water before buildings, painted by the second Earl (Dawyck) Haig (Scottish, 1918 - 2006). This very fine work in perfect condition has been acquired from friends of the artist when they were resident in Scotland and is clearly signed lower right. Dawyck Haig was the son of Field Marshall Douglas Haig, Britain's commander-in-chief during the first world war and he began exhibiting soon after the second world war ended and had his first London exhibition at The Redfern Gallery in 1949 and at the prestigious Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh during the same year. In 1956, he sold a portrait by auction at Christie's in London (who, at the same sale, also sold works by Rembrandt, Hogarth, Rubens and Reynolds) and this was the start of Haig's meteoric rise as an modern artist of true note. Haig also occasionally sold various works to the Royal Family and it is a matter of record that The Duke of Edinburgh bought one of these works for the sum of £750 on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II. Haig's works are now in the collections of the Arts Council and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and a retrospective of his work 'Haig at ninety' was held at the Scottish Gallery. The work presented here is in excellent condition and is offered to the market having previously been in the private hands of the owners for many years who purchased directly from the artist in Scotland. The good-sized watercolour offered represents a rare opportunity to acquire a Venetian scene by Haig and is patently colourful, striking and arresting. A real authenticated centerpiece on any wall by this most recognised, acknowledged and talented of Modern British Artists. This fine work will be shipped Asap to the buyer and if being sent to a buyer resident in the UK, will incur no shipping charges. Please feel free to email with any questions or for any further information that we can supply. Nb. One other smaller work (watercolour, Venetian scene, not listed here) is also available upon request.
