Very Large Oil on Canvas Still Life

This 19th century British art oil painting, presents a rustic domestic still life heavily inspired by traditional 17th-century Dutch banquet scenes. Arranged upon a crisp white tablecloth, the composition centres on a massive truckle wedge of matured British cheese resting on a ceramic stand, dramatically pierced by a large upright carving knife. To the left sits a sliced farmhouse loaf of bread atop crumpled brown packaging paper, while the right side balances the frame with a moulded turquoise-blue Staffordshire-style earthenware jug and a glass goblet filled with dark ale or port.
