Description
19th Century Victorian aesthetic movement desk with Anglo-Japanese influence by Blyth & Son, London.
The construction, carved drawer fronts, ring pulls for further writing service, turned legs, stretcher base, and black/gilt leather writing surface are all typical of high-quality Victorian office or library furniture. The raised twin stationery compartments, carved geometric drawer fronts, original leather surfaces and the stretchered base. The incised geometric carving on the drawer fronts resembles the linear ornament often used in Anglo-Japanese furniture.pull-out writing slide (sometimes called a writing leaf or extending writing surface). These were common on better-quality Victorian desks The overall form is comparatively rectilinear and restrained versus heavier High Victorian Gothic furniture. The raised superstructure with small drawers has the look of a cabinet-on-desk arrangement often seen in Aesthetic Movement designs. The exposed structure, stretcher base, and turned legs echo furniture inspired by designers like Edward William Godwin. The darkened oak with black leather and brass details also fits late-19th-century Anglo-Japanese taste.
Blyth & Sons were substantial London furniture manufacturers and upholsterers active in the 19th century, known for producing commercial and domestic furnishings. They operated from Chiswell Street / Finsbury and held royal and institutional commissions. The locks by Hobbs & Co. (later known as Hobbs, Hart & Co.) was a prominent 19th-century British locksmith and safe-making firm founded by Alfred Charles Hobbs, an American locksmith who famously traveled to London's 1851 Great Exhibition and sparked the "Great Lock Controversy" by successfully picking England's supposedly impenetrable locks. No key but one could probably be made upon purchasing
