British Victorian Newlyn School oil painting portrait Cornish Fisherman by David Wood Haddon dated 1888. Impress your clients and guests with this brave masculine mariner portrait masterpiece to display on your office or home wall space, Cornish Fisherman “One of the Crew” by David Wood Haddon C1888, set in a fine gilt frame which enhances further this work of art. Portrait of a local marine Cornish fisherman, one of the crew, he is smoking his traditional clay tobacco pipe. Wearing his classic mariners fisherman protective clothing. He has a grey beard and also has a maroon scarf, with a blue jumper underneath over a dirty antique white yellow overcoat. Signed at the bottom by the British artist David Wood Haddon. Victorian movement original style. Circa late 19th century Victorian era dated 1888. Origin from the United Kingdom. Medium oil on canvas with front protective glass cover backed on a panel back. Frame is a nice easy to display size being 35 cm wide and 45 cm high. Having such beautiful detail. David Wood Haddon was a known British 19th Century artist who was born in the mid 19th century Victorian era in the year 1859. A coveted Newlyn School artist who was originally born in the Midlands in the Birmingham area, he flourished during the late 19th century to the early 20th century between 1884 to 1914 period. His medium was oils and watercolour and he is fondly known for his smaller sized portraits of fishermen from the coastal marine fishing villages around Cornwall. He was known to have collaborated with other Newlyn school artists like Walter Langley, also Edward Harris, he exhibited in the Walker Gallery in Liverpool also the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. He died in 1914 around the start of WW1. His paintings have sold at auctions around the world like Christie’s. Offered in fine used condition. The front painting surface is in acceptable overall order, with various foxing staining, and craquelure commensurate with usage and old age. Set in original gilt frame, the frame has various signs of wear, scuffs, scratches, stains, cracking, losses in places commensurate with usage and old age.
