Description
A spectacularly fine Oil on Canvas by William Shayer, Senior (1788 - 1879) measuring 74cm x 99.5cm, Fisherfolk on the Beach The painting is housed by a period Gilt Frame of outstanding quality measuring 138.5cm length, 112.5cm height and a depth of 8.5cm Shayers' painting is pleasantly dramatic and captures the busy coastal scene where fishermen are selling and sorting their catch, women are fixing nets and a child looks on inquisitively.  Centrally, two horses are making the most of an opportunity to rest, and the fishing boats are moored up in the background.  The light is natural and bright but  you can sense dusk approaching. William Joseph Shayer Senior was a self-taught artist who began his career painting designs on chairs, later painting Carriages in Guildford, leading him on to a successful career in Heraldic painting,  He began to paint people, animals and landscapes in his spare time.  During a visit to see family in Southampton he collaborated with Jock Wilson, a seascape painter.  He then returned to Southampton to live where he painted all kinds of landscapes capturing British Life including Gamekeepers, Gypsies, Townsfolk and Coastal scenes. He became known for the breadth of his genre and his notable compositions.  His work has a depth and brightness to it due to his skilful application of glaze, (spreading a thin, oily, transparent layer of paint over a dry opaque paint).  He exhibited 6 works at the Royal Academy, 82 at the British Institution, 338 works at the Suffolk Street Gallery of the Society of British Artists and his works are on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Tate Gallery, the Glasgow Art Gallery and the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. Condition - Lined, some retouching, slight craquelure, some slightly thin areas; fine period gilt frame.
