Description
This is an impressive Ww2 souvenir rare hand painted lead figure of Tudor King Henry VIII sculpture standing on a wooden base. A feature that stands out are the magnificent hand painted colours & exceptional detail to his costume. King Henry VIII (1491-1547) ruled England for 36 years, presiding over sweeping changes that brought his nation into the Protestant Reformation. He famously married a series of six wives in his search for political alliance, marital bliss and a healthy male heir. His desire to annul his first marriage without papal approval led to the creation of a separate Church of England. Of his marriages, two ended in annulment, two in natural deaths and two with his wives’ beheadings for adultery and treason. His children Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I would each take their turn as England’s monarch. This was produced by The London Stonecraft Co. from the lead recovered from the bombed Houses of Parliament during an air raid in 1941. Verso on the figure is stamped 'Cast in Lead from The Houses of Parliament'. The London Stonecraft Company were permitted to make souvenirs for sale to raise funds on behalf of Hrh The Duke of Gloucester's Red Cross and St. John Fund. The objects produced included bookends, inkwells, letter racks, ashtrays and serviette rings and they utilised stone recovered from historic bombed London buildings including the House of Commons after being bombed by the Luftwaffe in the London Blitz in 1940 and 1941. Provenance bought from a fine antiques collectors auction label underneath the base. Heavy for its small size weighing 2.3kg unwrapped weight. Beautifully hand cast made from lead. It would make a fabulous collectors gift. Viewings are welcome by appointment only for customer support please send us a message. We offer our clients exceptional professional customer service.
