The 'duchesse brisee' (daybed) was orginally in three parts, two gondala type chairs of different height and depth with a 'labouret' between them. The Rococo movement later merged the day bed into a one piece c1740.
Four poster beds date back to the 15th century. The beds can often be very elaborately carved often with tapestries hung from the canopy and were very much a status symbol in Tudor England.
