Edwardian Tables

(308 items)

Edwardian tables reflect a distinct shift in British furniture design at the turn of the 20th century. Produced during the reign of Edward VII (1901–1910) and slightly beyond, this period moved away from the heavier forms of high Victorian furniture and embraced lighter proportions, elegance, and a renewed appreciation for earlier styles. While still rooted in traditional craftsmanship, Edwardian tables often feel more refined and adaptable than their predecessors.

A Lighter Aesthetic

Unlike many Victorian tables, which could be substantial and ornate, Edwardian tables were typically slimmer in profile. Legs were more delicately turned or tapered, carving became more restrained, and overall proportions were carefully balanced. There was a clear revival influence, drawing inspiration from Georgian and Sheraton designs, but interpreted with a softer, more contemporary touch for the early 20th-century home.

Timber and Decoration

Mahogany remained widely used, but it was often selected for a brighter tone and finer figure. Satinwood and other lighter timbers also became fashionable, particularly in pieces influenced by late Georgian revival taste. Inlay work — including stringing, banding, and subtle decorative motifs — was a hallmark of the period, reflecting a desire for elegance rather than weight.

Compared to earlier Georgian tables, which relied on solid mass and classical restraint, Edwardian tables frequently introduced decorative veneers and more visible contrast in timber. At the same time, they avoided the dense carving typical of mid-Victorian furniture.

Construction and Function

Although machine-assisted production was more common by the Edwardian era, quality tables were still built using traditional joinery. Extending dining tables remained popular, often incorporating improved metal winding mechanisms for smoother operation. Occasional tables, card tables, and writing tables were produced in greater variety, reflecting changing social habits and more flexible room layouts.
