19th Century British Equestrian Painting By Thomas Smythe Large Victorian Sporting Oil With Galloping Hunt Riders And Hounds Highlights Large 19th-century British sporting oil painting By Thomas Smythe (1825-1906) Signed T Smythe lower left Dramatic equestrian hunting subject Red-coated huntsman upon a white horse Multiple mounted riders and running hounds Expansive atmospheric countryside Oil on canvas Impressive decorative swept gilt frame Wilkinson's Auctioneers provenance Original 2022 auction documentation retained Approximately 120 cm wide framed Curated by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD Certificate of Sale & Dealer Attribution supplied Introduction A commanding 19th-century British equestrian painting by Suffolk artist Thomas Smythe (1825-1906), capturing the energy and spectacle of a Victorian hunt in full pursuit. The principal huntsman, dressed in a vivid scarlet coat and white breeches, charges through the landscape upon a striking grey horse. Immediately behind, another gentleman in a dark riding coat and tall black hat follows upon a rich chestnut brown horse. Further riders extend into the distance while a pack of hounds races across the open countryside to the left. The broad atmospheric sky, distant tree line and softly coloured landscape provide a wonderfully expansive setting for the sporting action. Catalogue Details Artist: Thomas Smythe (1825-1906) Medium: Oil on canvas Period: 19th century / Victorian Signature: Signed T Smythe lower left Subject: Equestrian / Hunting / Sporting Landscape Frame: Decorative swept gilt frame Canvas: approximately 71 x 107 cm Framed: approximately 85 x 120 cm The Artist Thomas Smythe was born in Ipswich in 1825 and became known for his paintings of landscapes, animals, rustic subjects and rural life. He exhibited seventeen paintings with the Society of British Artists and was an active member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club between 1878 and 1903. His combination of animal observation and atmospheric landscape painting made equestrian and sporting subjects particularly well suited to his artistic vocabulary. Provenance Private collection.
