The principal huntsman, dressed in a vivid scarlet coat and white breeches, charges through the landscape upon a striking grey horse. Immediately behind, another gentleman in a dark riding coat and tall black hat follows upon a rich chestnut brown horse. Further riders extend into the distance while a pack of hounds races across the open countryside to the left. The broad atmospheric sky, distant tree line and softly coloured landscape provide a wonderfully expansive setting for the sporting action. He exhibited seventeen paintings with the Society of British Artists and was an active member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club between 1878 and 1903. His combination of animal observation and atmospheric landscape painting made equestrian and sporting subjects particularly well suited to his artistic vocabulary. Provenance Private collection.
