Description
British Sporting Horse Oil Painting of a Grey Mare & Chestnut Foal After Henry William Banks Davis RA A charming British mid-century oil on canvas depicting a magnificent grey mare standing protectively beside her chestnut foal within a peaceful coastal landscape. Executed after Henry William Banks Davis RA's celebrated Victorian composition *Mother and Son*, this attractive hand-painted work beautifully captures the enduring bond between mare and foal, making it an ideal addition to any collection of equestrian, sporting or animal art. The composition centres upon the elegant grey mare watching attentively over her young foal, conveying warmth, protection and companionship. The artist has carefully modelled the horses with close attention to anatomy, proportion and expression, while subtle tonal variations and confident brushwork create depth and realism throughout the composition. The distant shoreline, open sea and expansive sky provide a calm and atmospheric backdrop, enhancing the painting's decorative appeal. Henry William Banks Davis RA (1833–1914) was one of Britain's foremost Victorian animal painters, celebrated for his depictions of horses, cattle and rural life. His original painting *Mother and Son*, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1881, became one of his best-known works. During the mid-twentieth century, hand-painted interpretations of famous Victorian compositions remained highly popular with collectors seeking traditional British country house and sporting subjects. This painting is correctly catalogued as **After Henry William Banks Davis RA** and should be regarded as a skilled decorative interpretation rather than an original work by the artist. The painting bears an indistinct monogram to the lower right which has not been positively identified. Presented in a quality Larson-Juhl stepped gilt moulded frame, the painting is ready to hang and enjoy immediately. Dimensions Canvas Width: 60 cm (23.62 in) Height: 48 cm (18.90 in) Framed Width: 70.5 cm (27.76 in) Height: 60.3 cm (23.74 in) Depth: 5.5 cm (2.17 in) Provenance * Private Collection. * Christie's inventory label to the reverse (No. 11019336). * Acquired through a respected Lancashire antiques dealer. * Curated by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD. The Christie's inventory label records the painting's passage through one of the world's leading auction houses, adding further provenance and collector interest. A highly decorative British sporting horse painting, ideal for collectors of equestrian art, country house interiors, hunting lodges and traditional British animal paintings.
