Description
Historic Americana Oil Painting of the Founding Fathers Drafting the Declaration of Independence, After Jean Leon Gerome Ferris, Signed Anna Richards
**Description**
A striking historical Americana oil painting on canvas depicting one of the most important moments in United States history circa 1970's — the drafting of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia in 1776.
This impressive composition portrays three of America's most celebrated Founding Fathers: Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson, gathered in discussion during the preparation of the Declaration before its presentation to the Continental Congress.
Executed in oil on canvas and signed lower right by Anna Richards, the painting is inspired by the celebrated historical compositions of Jean Leon Gerome Ferris. Rich in narrative appeal and decorative character, it successfully captures the spirit of the American Revolutionary era.
The scene is thoughtfully arranged with Franklin seated in contemplation, Adams providing a vibrant focal point at the centre, and Jefferson standing with manuscript papers and quill, emphasising his role as principal author of the Declaration.
Additional period details include a terrestrial globe, scholarly furnishings, manuscripts, and portraiture, all contributing to the intellectual atmosphere of the composition. Painted in warm tones with confident brushwork, the work balances historical storytelling with decorative appeal.
Historical paintings celebrating the birth of the United States remain highly sought after by collectors due to their enduring patriotic symbolism and educational significance. This work presents an artistic interpretation rather than a documentary reconstruction, following the romanticised historical tradition popularised by Ferris.
Presented in a recently fitted decorative gilt frame with museum-quality AR99 Artglass providing exceptional UV protection.
**Provenance**
Private American collection, originally acquired through an art dealer in Wakefield, Massachusetts, USA. Subsequently curated by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD.
