Antique Grand Tour Marly Horse Statues

Decorative pair of small antique Marly Horses figures, finely cast in soft metal and finished in a rich black patina, likely dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. These evocative sculptures are inspired by the celebrated Marly Horses, originally created by the French sculptor Guillaume Coustou the Elder for the gardens of the Château de Marly. A classic Grand Tour decorative pair, reflecting the enduring appeal of French neoclassical design. Each figure depicts a spirited rearing horse restrained by a youthful groom, capturing a sense of movement and classical drama. The modelling is you might say primitive but expressive at the same time, with well defined musculature to the horses and fluid drapery and pose to the handlers. Both figures are mounted on wooden circular stepped bases, with stylised ground and foliage beneath, adding to their sculptural presence. The surface shows honest age related wear, with light rubbing to the high points and edges, revealing hints of the underlying metal consistent with their age and use.  Both statues have a slight (wobble) on the base due to shrinkage of the wood. 13cm at their highest point including base, 11cm at their widest point.
