Antique Stained Glass Panel

Lovley small antique reverse painted 19th C. glass plaque depicting a stylised scorpion. Approx: 10cm by 9.5cm The scorpion is rendered in warm ochre and golden tones, shown in profile with raised pincers and a curled, segmented tail, set against a softly washed background suggesting grasses or scrub. The image is framed by a simple hand painted border in muted yellow and brown, typical of decorative work of the period. The glass is housed in soldered lead frame, with visible hand worked seams and a pleasingly irregular finish. A small metal hanging loop is fixed at the top, The surface shows age related wear, including minor losses to the paint and oxidation to the metal surround. Glass is showing rippling with tiny air bobbles, consistent with genuine age and adding to its character. it’s a charming and slightly curious piece, combining folk art aesthetics with astrological or symbolic imagery very much the sort of object that would have appealed in the 19th C.
