Description
Antique Victorian Landscape Oil Painting – Snowdon / Yr Wyddfa, Wales, Storm Clearing with Rainbow – By Charles Leslie c1878. A commanding Victorian landscape depicting the Snowdon range at the precise moment a summer shower clears and light returns, revealing a luminous rainbow above still water. This is a classic “sublime” mountain view: dramatic weather, vast sky, and calm foreground harmony, painted on a grand scale with excellent atmospheric depth. Subject and Medium A sweeping view of Snowdon / Yr Wyddfa (Wales) as storm clouds lift and sunlight breaks through. A refined rainbow arcs across layered cloud, while quiet water and distant peaks create a powerful sense of distance and calm after rain. Oil on canvas (professionally relined – see condition report). Composition and Technique Leslie’s composition leads the eye from the hushed foreground water into the valley and up toward the cool, misted mountains, where forms soften into haze and thinning cloud. The sky is the dramatic centre: shifting storm tones and shafts of light are handled with restraint and realism, giving the painting that prized Victorian sense of weather and space. Cool silvery greys, slate notes, and soft blue-green tones describe the distant peaks, contrasted by a warmer right-hand shoreline of ochres, russets, deep browns, and mossy greens. Subtle reflections in the water heighten the stillness, while small birds and two quiet figures fishing add scale and human presence without disturbing the mood. The result is a beautifully balanced work—both theatrical and serene. About the Artist Charles Leslie (British, 19th Century)—often identified as Charles Edward John Leslie (1839–1886)—worked within the Victorian landscape tradition associated with the celebrated Williams family circle. He is recorded as exhibiting at major London venues including the Royal Academy of Arts, the British Institution, and the Suffolk Street Gallery (Society of British Artists). Leslie’s Welsh and Scottish mountain subjects were especially sought after for their romantic atmosphere, broad skies, reflective waters, and strong sense of place. Historical Significance In Victorian Britain, Snowdon and the Welsh landscape held strong Romantic associations—rugged terrain and shifting weather were prized expressions of the sublime. Dated 1878, this painting sits firmly within the era when large-scale British landscape oils were created for impressive interiors, combining decorative impact with painterly atmosphere. Signature and Title Plaque Signed and dated in red to the lower left: “Charles Leslie 1878.” Also fitted with a brass title plaque reading: “A Summer Shower Passing Over The Snowdon Range – Charles Leslie – 1878.” Frame Presented in a substantial, richly ornamented gilt frame, well suited to the scale and Victorian character of the work. Dimensions (Framed) 89.5 cm high x 140 cm wide x 6 cm deep A true statement painting—ideal for a library, office, or principal reception room. Provenance Private collection. Documented UK auction provenance: sold by Bigwood Auctioneers & Valuers Ltd (Stratford-upon-Avon) in the Select Interiors & Antiques auction, 29 July 2022, Lot 168.
