Description
Antique Victorian Oil Painting – Welsh River Landscape, River Conwy, North Wales – Thomas Spinks c.1890 Artist: Thomas Spinks (1847–1927) Title: A Quiet Pool, North Wales – On the Conwy River Date: Circa 1890 (Late 19th Century, Victorian) Medium: Oil on canvas Signature: Signed “T. Spinks” lower corner Frame: Original gilt frame, ready to hang Overview A superb antique Victorian oil painting depicting a tranquil, reflective pool on the River Conwy in North Wales, painted during Thomas Spinks’ sought-after Welsh period. This is a classic late 19th-century British landscape: rugged river boulders, mature trees, gentle pasture, and distant hills under a dramatic Welsh sky. Description The scene centres on a calm pool of the River Conwy, with jagged stone boulders defining the left bank and softer ground to the right, where trees and an orchard-like clearing create depth. Two grazing sheep provide scale and pastoral charm. A warm golden-brown foreground tree anchors the composition against cool greens and greys, while the water is convincingly rendered with movement, light, and weight. Beyond, distant mountains soften into atmospheric recession. Above, blue sky and bright cloud are balanced by a gathering storm cloud—an evocative detail typical of North Welsh weather. Victorian Welsh Landscape Context Painted around 1890, this work reflects the period when Bettws-y-Coed and the Conwy Valley became one of Britain’s leading landscape painting locations, attracting artists for wooded valleys, rivers, rock formations, and ever-changing skies. Antique paintings of this type were prized in Victorian interiors and remain highly desirable today for their timeless decorative impact and strong sense of place. Artist Notes Thomas Spinks (1847–1927) was a recognised British landscape painter who exhibited between 1880 and 1907, including at the Royal Academy, and major institutions such as the Walker Art Gallery (Liverpool) and Manchester Art Gallery. He moved to Bettws-y-Coed in 1889, and his Welsh river and mountain paintings from this period are widely regarded as among his strongest and most collectible works. Dimensions (Frame) Height: 46.5 cm Width: 62 cm Depth: 5.5 cm An excellent wall size—substantial presence without being difficult to place. Provenance and Labels The reverse bears a Prestwich Fine Art label with handwritten details. Provenance is recorded as private collection, Mitchells (Lake District auction house), and later curated by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD. The canvas also retains a faint but legible maker’s stamp: “WINSOR & NEWTON / LONDON”, consistent with late 19th-century artists’ materials and supportive of period authenticity and quality. Why This Piece Works Antique Victorian oil on canvas by a known exhibiting British artist Highly decorative Welsh river landscape: River Conwy, North Wales Painted during the artist’s Bettws-y-Coed / Conwy Valley period Signed and attractively presented in an original gilt frame Retains Winsor & Newton London canvas stamp Strong provenance and ready for display Antique oil painting, Victorian oil painting, British landscape painting, Welsh landscape oil painting, River Conwy painting, North Wales antique art, Bettws-y-Coed artist, late 19th century painting, signed Victorian painting, gilt framed oil painting, antique framed artwork, pastoral landscape painting, Thomas Spinks oil painting, Victorian wall art, collectible British art.
