Description
This is an antique Woodblock landscape picture. A Japanese, framed print in the manner of Hiroshige, dating to the late Victorian period, circa 1900.
Fascinating Edo period ukio-e artwork, originally by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 - 1858), displaying a desirable aged patina and in good order throughout. Quality woodblock detail, printed on paper in a distinctive colour palette. Mounted within a tasteful later frame, with hanging wire to the reverse.
Presents the Yugyoji Temple in Fujisawa during the mid 19th century. Prominent Torii gate in the foreground, used to denote the entrance to a shrine. Specifically, its the head of the path to the island shrine of Enoshima Benzaiten. Travellers on pilgrimage cross the Daigiri Bridge over the Sakai River.
After Hiroshige, whose art was influenced by the famous Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji by Hokusai of Great Wave fame. His woodblock series The Fifty Three Stations of Tokaido is considered to be a peak of the ukio-e style. The left margin, vertical signature reads Hiroshige ga or 'Drawn by Hiroshige' in English.
This is a delightful antique Woodblock landscape picture, presenting a renowned artwork from the revered Utagawa Hiroshige and his ukiyo-e style. Delivered ready to display.
