Early 19th C. Miniature Portrait Study Of An Old Man
"Puzzled old man" one might say, delicate mixed media painting: watercolour, pencil and ink.
Circle of Thomas Rowlandson.
This early 19th-century watercolour depicts a finely observed profile portrait of an elderly gentleman, rendered with delicate linework and soft washes of colour. The sitter is shown seated, half-length, absorbed in reading a document or letter which he holds carefully in his right hand, while his left hand is raised with a finger to his temple in a thoughtful gesture.
The man is bald on top with wisps of grey hair at the sides, his features sharply defined with a prominent nose and lined face that conveys age and character. He wears a pale blue coat over a yellow waistcoat, accented with small buttons and a loosely tied blue cravat at the neck—typical attire of the early 19th century.
The palette is restrained, favouring muted blues, greys, and ochres, which lends the work a gentle, reflective mood. The figure stands out crisply against the softly toned background, which has been left bare to emphasise the sitter.
Overall, the painting is a lively and intimate study, likely intended as a character sketch rather than a formal portrait, capturing both the personality and contemplative air of its subject.
In used condition showing imperfections, staining to paper, later gilt frame showing wear and tear.
