Description
Rare Georgian Reverse-Painted Mezzotint on Glass of King George III **After Jeremiah Meyer RA, Engraved by Richard Purcell, London c.1763–1765 A rare and highly decorative Georgian reverse-painted mezzotint on glass depicting King George III, engraved by Richard Purcell after a portrait by Jeremiah Meyer RA and published by Robert Sayer of Fleet Street, London, circa 1763–1765. This exceptional eighteenth-century portrait is a fine example of British Georgian decorative art, combining the refined tonal qualities of mezzotint engraving with the specialised craft of reverse painting on glass. Such works were among the most fashionable forms of interior decoration during the Georgian period and are considerably rarer today than conventional paper engravings. The portrait depicts the young King George III wearing formal court dress and the insignia of the Most Noble Order of the Garter. Originally engraved as a mezzotint by Richard Purcell after Jeremiah Meyer's celebrated likeness of the newly crowned monarch, the print was subsequently hand-coloured and reverse-painted onto glass, a technically demanding process requiring each detail and colour to be applied in reverse order to the back of the glass before viewing from the front. The lower margin retains its original engraved inscriptions, including: *Meyer Pinx.* *Richd. Purcil Fecit* *George the III, King of Great Britain, &c. &c.* Together with the publisher's imprint for Robert Sayer of Fleet Street, London. Jeremiah Meyer RA (1735–1789) was a founding member of the Royal Academy and Portrait Painter to Queen Charlotte. Richard Purcell (c.1720–1766) is recognised as one of the finest British mezzotint engravers of the eighteenth century. Published shortly after George III's accession to the throne, this portrait reflects the golden age of British mezzotint engraving. Reverse-painted glass portraits were frequently displayed in country houses, libraries, and formal reception rooms, serving as both decorative works and symbols of royal authority and national identity. Provenance Private Collection, United Kingdom. Hutchinson Scott Auctioneers, Lot 656. Privately loaned and exhibited at the Famous Lord Hill Museum, Shropshire. Curated by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD. excellent colour, strong decorative appeal, and complete inscriptions. Professionally conserved and housed in a bespoke Larson-Juhl frame with premium Artglass AR99 museum glazing, providing exceptional clarity and ultraviolet protection. Dimensions Framed: 42.5 cm high × 33 cm wide Visible Image: 36 cm high × 25 cm wide A scarce and increasingly sought-after example of Georgian royal portraiture, ideal for collectors of British antiques, eighteenth-century engravings, mezzotints, historic royal memorabilia, and country house interiors.
