Description
King George III Returning from Hunting at Windsor Castle A substantial and highly decorative mid-19th Century oil on canvas depicting King George III returning from the hunt before Windsor Castle, after a celebrated composition by the renowned British sporting artist James Pollard (1792–1867). The composition presents the monarch mounted on horseback and accompanied by fellow riders, attendants and a lively pack of hounds, with the magnificent silhouette of Windsor Castle beyond. The Round Tower and St George's Chapel are clearly recognisable, creating an impressive combination of royal, sporting and architectural subject matter. Executed in the traditional manner of nineteenth-century British sporting art, the painting successfully combines equestrian portraiture, landscape and historical narrative. Rich earthy tones are balanced by a luminous sky, drawing the eye towards the royal procession and creating a scene of considerable decorative appeal. James Pollard (1792–1867): James Pollard ranks amongst the most respected British sporting and coaching painters of the nineteenth century. Best known for his depictions of hunting scenes, coaching subjects, racehorses and royal sporting events, his work remains highly regarded by collectors of traditional British sporting art. This painting follows one of Pollard's celebrated royal hunting compositions and reflects the continued popularity of his work throughout the Victorian period. Historical Interest: King George III maintained a close association with Windsor and Windsor Great Park, where hunting and other country pursuits formed an important part of royal life. Paintings depicting these activities became highly fashionable amongst Britain's aristocracy and landed gentry, serving both as decorative works and records of rural and royal life. The combination of Windsor Castle and a royal hunting subject gives this painting broad appeal to collectors of British historical art, sporting paintings, equestrian subjects and royal memorabilia. Provenance: Private Collection, United Kingdom. Halls The Auction House. Curated by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD. Privately Loaned and Exhibited at the Famous Lord Hill Museum. A closely related pair comprising this composition and its companion subject, King George III Hunting in Windsor Forest, was sold by Bonhams, San Francisco, in 2005 and catalogued as "Circle of James Pollard". Those paintings measured approximately 106.7 cm x 76.2 cm, virtually identical to the present example. A fine large-scale country house painting combining royal history, equestrian interest and one of Britain's most iconic architectural landmarks. Equally suited to a traditional interior, library, study, country house, hotel or private collection.

condition
The painting is presented in good decorative condition for its age. The canvas has been professionally relined and mounted onto a later stretcher, providing stability and support. The paint surface displays age-related craquelure consistent with a nineteenth-century oil painting, together with minor paint loss towards the outer side edges. The work retains strong colour and displays particularly well. Presented within a substantial Victorian gilt frame retaining its original inner slip. The frame shows expected age-related wear, historic repairs, minor losses and surface imperfections commensurate with age. The outer frame has been sympathetically refreshed in recent years to enhance its presentation. Overall, an impressive and ready-to-display example of nineteenth-century British sporting and royal art.
