Description
Important 17th Century François Perrier (1590–1650) Etching Classical Antiquity
This is a superb and highly decorative original 17th-century Etching by the important French Baroque painter and printmaker François Perrier (1590–1650).
Dating from the first half of the 17th century, this fascinating antique engraving is characteristic of Perrier's celebrated studies after the great sculptures and antiquities of classical Rome.
The composition depicts a dramatic group of classical figures gathered around an ancient sculptural subject, rendered with the wonderful fine line, cross-hatching and attention to anatomical detail associated with 17th-century printmaking.
François Perrier was an influential French Baroque artist, engraver and draughtsman who spent considerable periods working in Rome, where he studied and recorded many of the celebrated classical sculptures of antiquity. His engraved works played an important role in disseminating images of these ancient masterpieces throughout Europe.
The Etching retains the wonderful character and tonal quality expected of a work approaching four centuries of age, making it particularly appealing to collectors of early prints, Old Master works and classical antiquities.
It has been professionally presented within a particularly handsome ornate gilt moulded frame, complemented by an extensive multi-layered conservation-style mount with fine gilt detailing. The sympathetic presentation allows the relatively small and intricately worked 17th-century image to become a substantial and extremely decorative piece for the wall.
A genuine early work of considerable historical and decorative appeal, and a wonderful opportunity to acquire an original 17th-century Etching by a recognised and important French Baroque artist.
