Original 17th Century François Perrier Roman Baroque Etching c.1640

A superb and historically fascinating original 17th Century Roman Baroque etching, attributed to the celebrated French painter and engraver François Perrier (1590–1650), dating to circa 1640. Entitled Relief with Rome and Victory, this finely executed antique engraving is associated with Perrier's celebrated series of classical antiquities, Icones et Segmenta Illustrium e Marmore Tabularum, depicting ancient Roman sculptural reliefs and monuments. The composition presents an elaborate classical scene celebrating the victories of the Roman Emperor Augustus, with beautifully articulated figures representing Rome, Victory and imperial triumph. At the centre of the composition is a circular monument bearing the Latin inscription VOTIS X ET XX, referring to the imperial vows associated with the tenth and twentieth anniversaries of an emperor's reign. Beneath the composition is an extensive engraved Latin inscription describing the celebration of Augustus's victories and the renewal of imperial power. The engraving displays remarkable attention to detail, with beautifully executed cross-hatching, finely rendered classical drapery and wonderfully expressive figures. The work is beautifully presented within a substantial decorative gilt frame, complemented by a cream mount with gilt detailing, and is protected behind glass.
