Samuel Howitt (1756–1822) Original Antique Etching – Recumbent Lioness

This is a superb original antique etching by the celebrated British sporting and animal artist Samuel Howitt (1756–1822), depicting a powerful recumbent lioness or large feline resting within a dramatic landscape. The animal is beautifully portrayed lying upon a rocky outcrop, its forepaws prominently crossed and its head raised attentively. Howitt has captured both the strength and character of the animal particularly well, while the surrounding vegetation, distant mountainous landscape and wonderfully worked sky create an atmospheric setting. The exceptionally fine engraved linework is particularly evident throughout the animal's coat, face, paws and surrounding foliage, demonstrating the considerable technical ability for which Howitt's animal studies became so admired. Inscribed within the plate at the lower left “Howitt del. et f.”, indicating Samuel Howitt as both the draughtsman/designer and maker of the work. Samuel Howitt was one of the foremost British animal and sporting artists of the late Georgian period and became particularly admired for his depictions of horses, dogs, livestock, hunting scenes and exotic animals. His studies of wild animals form a particularly interesting aspect of his graphic work and demonstrate his ability to capture both anatomy and character with remarkable economy and precision. The etching has been very attractively presented beneath glass with an elaborate multi-layered conservation-style mount, including hand-lined and marbled decorative borders, and housed within an elegant black and gilt frame.
