Description
An authentic, rare, and unusually large mid-century British studio pottery serving dish by world-renowned ceramicist Dame Lucie Rie (1902–1995), dating to circa early 1960s.
Measuring an impressive 15.5 inches in length by 11 inches in width, this is a substantial and imposing example of her studio output. Thrown initially as a large circular bowl with a shallow conical form, Rie hand-cut and altered the wet clay into an organic, softly rectangular / oval profile.
The interior features her iconic, fine horizontal sgraffito combing filled with dark oxide tones against a beautifully pitted cream and speckled green stoneware glaze. The reverse showcases a characteristic rough, unglazed raw stoneware foot ring with a turned, recessed center.
Provenance & Authentication:
This piece comes with invaluable institutional provenance, including written correspondence from Greta Bertram, Curator of Collections at the Crafts Study Centre. The Centre's Lucie Rie specialist confirmed the form, technique, and production era, noting:
"I have seen things like this before... she threw a circular bowl with a shallow conical form that left a lot of clay around the very base around the footring. Then she cuts it roughly rectangular... early 60s would be my guess... Most of the tablewares were made in relatively large quantities and often retailed through department stores [like Heal's or Primavera]".
