Description
This is a large, superb and all-original 18th-century Oil on Canvas Portrait Painting depicting the distinguished clergyman and Vicar of Kinver, Reverend Paul White (1726–1779). The wonderfully lifelike portrait portrays the Reverend White seated in a dignified and contemplative pose, wearing a finely rendered powdered white clerical wig together with traditional 18th-century Anglican liturgical attire, including crisp white linen preaching bands and a flowing black clerical robe. Painted during the Georgian period, the work is executed in the style and manner of Thomas Hudson (1701–1779), one of Britain's foremost portrait painters of the 18th century and an artist whose elegant portraiture defined much of the era. The painting displays the same restrained composition, refined facial modelling and commanding presence so characteristic of Hudson's celebrated works. The portrait is housed within its huge, original and spectacular quality giltwood and gesso frame, richly moulded and beautifully preserving the grandeur expected of an important Georgian portrait. Together, the painting and frame create an exceptionally impressive statement piece suitable for a period home, country house or traditional interior. An original attached label to the reverse identifies the sitter as Paul White, together with details relating to his ecclesiastical career as Vicar of Kinver, adding both historical interest and provenance to this remarkable work. A beautiful and imposing original Georgian portrait offering exceptional decorative appeal, historical significance and wonderful period character.
