Introduction An imposing late Victorian maritime oil painting depicting the vessel traditionally identified as the Ansello of Dundee caught in mountainous storm seas as a lifeboat and its crew fight their way towards the distressed ship. The painting is attributed to British marine painter William Broome of Ramsgate (1838–1892) and bears a distinctive red “WB” monogram lower left. Combining detailed observation of shipping with an exceptionally dramatic treatment of sea and sky, the work belongs to the great Victorian tradition of maritime rescue painting. The Maritime Scene The dark-hulled vessel dominates the composition, pitching heavily through the storm. Its funnel, masts, rigging, deck structures and crew are carefully represented while immense waves break around the ship. In the foreground the lifeboat rises between white-crested waves, its crew continuing towards the vessel despite the severity of the conditions. The contrast between the relatively small lifeboat, substantial ship and overwhelming scale of the sea creates a powerful narrative of courage and maritime danger. William Broome William Broome (1838–1892) was a British marine painter associated with Ramsgate. Documented examples of Broome's work establish his interest in shipping, rough seas and maritime rescue subjects, including compositions incorporating lifeboats and vessels receiving assistance. The present work bears the monogram “WB”. Its period, subject and relationship with Broome's documented marine oeuvre support the attribution, which is appropriately presented as attributed rather than as unconditional authorship. The James Sturm Connection The lifeboat represented in the painting has traditionally been identified as the James Sturm of Buckie. Historical RNLI records establish that James Sturm entered service at Buckie in 1871 and remained there until 1889. Contemporary records also document the lifeboat participating in rescues during severe weather. The identification of the painted rescue craft as James Sturm remains traditional rather than conclusively established. If correct, however, its documented 1871–1889 service provides an important possible chronological framework for the subject.
