Description
Antique Victorian Marine Oil Painting of the Harland & Wolff Clipper Slieve Roe Attributed to Lai Fong
Description
A fine late Victorian marine oil on canvas depicting the celebrated British iron full-rigged clipper Slieve Roe under full sail off the coast of Calcutta (now Kolkata), India. Attributed to the noted Chinese marine painter Lai Fong (Fl. 1870–1910), this impressive maritime painting is an excellent example of nineteenth-century ship portraiture.
The vessel is shown in starboard profile sailing through rolling seas beneath an expansive sky, with every sail set and the British Red Ensign flying proudly from the stern. The intricate rigging, detailed hull and carefully observed proportions demonstrate the artist's considerable understanding of historic sailing ships.
About the Artist
Attributed to Lai Fong, one of the best-known Chinese marine painters working in Calcutta during the late nineteenth century. His detailed portraits of merchant vessels were highly sought after by shipowners and captains and remain popular with collectors of maritime art today.
About the Ship
Built by Harland & Wolff, Belfast, in 1878, Slieve Roe was one of the famous Sinclair colonial clippers. Designed for the Britain and India trade, she transported valuable cargoes including jute and tea and established a reputation as one of the fastest merchant sailing ships of her period. She remains an important vessel in British maritime history.
Frame
Presented in a later gilt and ebonised moulded frame, ready for display.
Provenance
Private collection.
Previously offered by Cheffins, Cambridge, as Lot 64 in 2023 and catalogued as attributed to Lai Fong.

Condition Report
Offered in charming antique condition consistent with age.
The painting displays a stable network of various age-related craquelure across the painted surface together with scattered foxing, stretcher marks and evidence of historic age. The canvas has been professionally reinforced around the perimeter with strip cotton lining. There are scattered historic areas of sympathetic overpainting together with isolated areas of paint loss and restoration visible under close inspection. The varnish has naturally mellowed over time and the painting would benefit from a sympathetic professional clean should the next owner wish to further enhance its presentation.
The later gilt and ebony frame displays general age-related wear including minor chips, scuffs, stains and small losses commensurate with age and use, yet continues to complement the artwork beautifully.
Overall, the painting presents exceptionally well and possesses outstanding decorative and historical appeal.
