WW 2 Model Aeroplane
A one of a kind, distinctive hand made wooden model aeroplane dating from the 1940s, crafted as a desktop or display piece. This model reflects the understated elegance and practical craftsmanship of the wartime and immediate post war period.
Carved from solid hardwood with a rich, naturally aged patina, the aeroplane represents a twin engine aircraft (possibly P38 Lightning or P-61 Black Widow) with deliberately simplified yet well balanced proportions. The smoothly contoured fuselage and wings are complemented by twin wooden propellers with soft metal fixings, while the rounded engine nacelles show confident hand shaping and attention to form.
The model sits on small discreet castors, likely intended to allow gentle positioning on a desk or surface rather than active use. Visible fixings, hand tool marks, and subtle asymmetry are entirely consistent with a bespoke, individually made piece and contribute to its authenticity and charm. It's also worth pointing out, two lead weights mounted on the underside of the nose, keeping the aeroplane sitting flat.
A characterful and uncommon survivor, this 1940s hand crafted aeroplane makes an evocative decorative object, ideal for a study, library, or aviation-inspired interior.
31cm wingspan, 28cm nose to tail.
