Description
Mid-20th Century Watercolour Portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt by Beatrice S. Bullock (1878–1953), Signed and Inscribed Verso Description A charming and historically interesting mid-20th century watercolour portrait of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882–1945), painted circa early 1940s by Birmingham artist Beatrice S. Bullock (1878–1953). The portrait shows Roosevelt in a three-quarter bust, turned slightly toward the viewer, dressed in a dark suit with white shirt and bow tie, and wearing his distinctive pince-nez spectacles. The artist has captured a calm and composed expression, conveying both authority and approachability—qualities closely associated with Roosevelt during his presidency. Executed in watercolour on paper, the work displays a restrained palette and careful handling typical of British portrait painting of the period, with soft washes used to model the face and features. About the Artist Beatrice S. Bullock (1878–1953) was an artist based in Birmingham, active during the early to mid-20th century. Her address at 14 Kingsleigh Road, Handsworth Wood, Birmingham is recorded on the reverse of this painting. She is referenced in Birmingham museum and archival records, and is known to have produced a number of watercolours. She donated work to Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery in 1938 (Heathfield Hall) and exhibited locally, including at Park House, Handsworth Park. Her work was later held by the Handsworth Historical Society. Historical Interest Painted during Roosevelt’s presidency (1933–1945), the portrait reflects his international standing as a leading Allied figure during the Second World War. His image was widely recognised in Britain, making this a particularly interesting example of a British artist depicting an American president at a pivotal moment in history. Signature & Inscriptions Signed with initials “BB” to the front. The reverse is fully inscribed with the artist’s name and Birmingham address, together with the title “President Franklin Delano Roosevelt”. Also bearing a period price notation “£10.0.0”. Frame Presented in a later gilt frame with double mount. Ready to hang. Dimensions Frame: 41.5 cm high × 36 cm wide × 2 cm deep Visible image: 20 cm high × 15 cm wide Provenance By Beatrice S. Bullock (1878–1953), Birmingham, as inscribed verso. Exhibited at the Famous Lord Hill Museum, 4 April 2026. Curated by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD.
