Mid Century Murano Sommerso Amber & Smoke Glass Vase

A stylish mid-century Murano Sommerso glass vase, dating to approximately the 1960s, of tall, slender and beautifully faceted form. The vase has a rich smoky amber-brown interior, surrounded by contrasting layers of lighter amber and clear glass. The carefully cut and polished exterior facets create wonderful variations in colour as the vase is viewed from different angles, ranging from warm golden amber through tobacco brown to almost smoky black. At 23 cm tall, this is a particularly elegant example. It is noticeably more slender and lighter in construction than some of the heavier Sommerso vases of the period, giving it a refined architectural appearance while retaining the characteristic substantial quality of Murano art glass. The combination of geometric cutting, graduated colour and submerged layers is typical of the Sommerso technique for which Murano became internationally celebrated during the 1950s and 1960s. The design is reminiscent of work associated with Flavio Poli and Seguso Vetri d'Arte.
