Description
Captivating 1930s–1940s oil by Philippe de Rougemont, French‑born Swedish artist known for expressive nudes Why We Love This … A wonderfully intimate and expressive oil on canvas by the listed French‑born artist Philippe de Rougemont, painted during his highly productive Swedish period in the 1930s–1940s. Blending Belle Époque figurative tradition with Scandinavian modernism, the work captures a woman admiring herself in the mirror - confident, self‑possessed, and full of personality. De Rougemont’s draughtsmanship is exceptional: the raised arm, angled mirror, and carefully placed objects guide the eye with deliberate elegance. The interplay of light and reflection creates a sense of presence, as though we are sharing the room with her. He trained in Paris at the Académie Delecluse, a respected private atelier known for its rigorous academic instruction and emphasis on figure drawing. His early Parisian training grounded him in classical technique, which remained evident throughout his career. In 1919 he moved to Stockholm with his wife, the Swedish artist Sigrid Wahlström. This relocation marked the beginning of his most productive and celebrated period. Immersed in Scandinavian artistic circles, he developed a distinctive style that blended French academic precision with the lighter, more modern sensibilities of Swedish painting between the wars. His portraits and nudes became highly sought after, and he painted numerous prominent Swedish figures. His works are held in the Maritime Museum in Gothenburg and the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and he has appeared at major auction houses including Sotheby’s, New York. The artist’s original business card accompanies this painting - a charming and authentic piece of provenance. Social History: The 1930s–1940s in Sweden saw a flourishing of modernist interiors, domestic scenes, and explorations of private life. De Rougemont’s work fits beautifully into this cultural moment: intimate, observational, and rooted in the everyday rituals of self‑presentation. His nudes are notable for their agency - not passive muses, but women with personality, confidence, and presence. This painting captures that ethos perfectly.
