🏛️ 18th Century Italian Baroque Old Master Oil Painting – "Apollo and Marsyas with the Judgment of King Midas"
Mythological Musical Contest Scene | After Filippo Lauri (1623–1694)
🎨 Subject & Medium
This striking 18th-century oil on canvas depicts a powerful mythological moment—the musical contest between Apollo, god of music, and the Phrygian satyr Marsyas. A tale of rivalry, pride, and divine retribution, this classical scene is painted in the Italian Old Master tradition and attributed to an artist working after Filippo Lauri, a prominent figure of the Roman Baroque school.
🎼 The Myth of Apollo and Marsyas
According to Greek mythology, Marsyas discovered a double-reed flute (aulos) once discarded by the goddess Athena. Confident in his talent, he challenged Apollo to a musical duel, with the god playing the stringed cithara. Judges—either the Muses or King Midas, depending on the version—declared Apollo the victor after he introduced vocal performance, something Marsyas could not match on a wind instrument.
The outcome was tragic: as agreed, the winner chose the penalty. Apollo, angered by Marsyas’s boldness, had him flayed alive—a chilling reminder of the gods’ wrath toward hubris.
⚡ Classical Themes of Judgment and Punishment
The painting not only portrays this iconic contest but also reflects broader themes in Greek mythology, where mortals who challenge divine authority often meet severe consequences. Similar fates befell figures such as Arachne and Niobe, reinforcing the cautionary nature of these enduring tales.
🖌️ Artistic Composition & Style
Set within a wooded landscape beneath a dramatic sky, the composition centers on Apollo and Marsyas, with King Midas nearby in judgment. The scene is rendered with refined anatomical precision and rich emotional depth. Chiaroscuro enhances the tension, while a harmonious palette lends vibrancy and movement. The theatrical composition and classical proportions are highly characteristic of the Baroque period and resonate strongly with the style of Filippo Lauri and his Roman contemporaries.
🖼️ Frame Details
The painting is housed in an exquisite antique gilt gesso frame, featuring elaborate Baroque scrollwork and foliate ornamentation.
Dimensions (Framed): Height: 72 cm | Width: 97.5 cm | Depth: 4.5 cm
Weight: Approx. 9 kg (unwrapped)
The frame complements the historic grandeur of the piece and is ready for immediate display.
✍️ Signature & Attribution
This work is unsigned, which is typical for many studio or follower works of the period. It is confidently attributed to an Italian School artist, working in the style of Filippo Lauri (1623–1694), whose influence is evident in the composition and expressive handling.
👤 About Filippo Lauri
Filippo Lauri was a leading painter of the Roman Baroque, trained by his father and later mentored by Angelo Caroselli. As a member—and later director—of the prestigious Accademia di San Luca, Lauri collaborated with artists such as Claude Lorrain, contributing refined figures to grand narrative works. His hallmark style is defined by elegant, small-scale figures and mythological subjects, executed with theatrical flair and technical finesse.
