Original Woodcut Nut to Cherryburn’ by C Neville (1908-1999) Signed & Dated 1986

Lovely woodcut by Neville Bertram of a squirrel on a drystone wall. The woodcut is signed, dated and inscribed. Cerryburn is in Northumberland and the birthplace of Thomas Bewick (1753-1828). Sculptor, painter and teacher. Born in Cullercoats, Northumberland, he studied at Durham university 1926-29, where he gained a diploma in fine art. In 1930 he obtained his Board of Education drawing and painting certificates under Robert Lyon. He moved to Liverpool in 1933, making commercial and monumental sculpture with Herbert Tyson Smith, whose daughter he married. After six years with the Air Ministry, he taught at Liverpool College of art from 1945 to 1973. He joined Liverpool academy in 1946, becoming honorary treasurer and secretary. In 1950 he was made an associate of the Royal Society of British Sculptors. His work is held by the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool.
