Description
Pair of 19th Century Belgian Animal Paintings by Franz van Severdonck (1809–1889) Oil on Panel Pastoral Scenes with Sheep and Livestock Subject and Medium A decorative pair of mid-19th century Belgian oil paintings on panel, depicting traditional pastoral scenes with sheep, lambs, goat, cattle and ducks. These cabinet-sized works are typical of the European animal painting tradition and offer both collector appeal and strong decorative presence. Composition & Technique Each painting is thoughtfully composed with a balanced arrangement of livestock within a natural landscape setting. One scene shows a ewe resting with two lambs, accompanied by a standing goat and a duck in the foreground. The companion painting depicts a ewe with lamb alongside a reclining sheep, again with a duck completing the composition. The colour palette is soft and naturalistic, with warm creams and whites defining the sheep, contrasted by deeper browns and set against green landscape tones and a pale sky. The animals are sensitively rendered with calm expressions and natural posture, demonstrating the artist’s skill in capturing rural subject matter. Brushwork is controlled, with attention to texture in the wool and surrounding foliage. Historical Context Animal painting was a highly popular genre in 19th century Europe. Belgian artists, particularly those influenced by Eugène Verboeckhoven, became known for their finely detailed and decorative pastoral works. Paintings of this type were widely collected and remain desirable today for both their artistic and decorative qualities. About the Artist Franz van Severdonck (1809–1889) was a Belgian painter working in Brussels. He specialised in animal subjects, particularly sheep and livestock within pastoral landscapes. He is regarded as part of the Verboeckhoven school, and his works continue to appear on the art market and are collected internationally. Signed Both paintings are signed to the lower corners. Framed Presented in gilt frames which complement the period character of the paintings. Ready for display. Size Each frame measures approximately: Height: 26 cm Width: 32 cm Depth: 3.25 cm A pleasing cabinet size suitable for a variety of interiors. Provenance Private collection. Acquired from Trevanion Auctioneers & Valuers, Shropshire, 2022. Purchased by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD.
