Description
Victorian Naïve School Oil Painting “Prized Shorthorn Bull” – British School, After William Ward Subject & Medium:- Title: Prized Shorthorn Bull – British School, after William Ward A handsome 19th-century / Victorian oil on canvas livestock portrait showing a brown-and-white prized Shorthorn bull in full left profile, standing in open pasture beneath a softly clouded sky. A tall tree positioned at the upper left helps to structure the composition and frames the animal, giving the scene a pleasing, traditional rural character. Composition & Technique:- The bull’s powerful, well-fleshed form is painted in warm, natural tones – deep russet, creamy white and chestnut – set against fresh green grass and a subdued blue-grey sky. Controlled, careful brushwork delineates the distinctive coat pattern, horns and sturdy head, while broader, more fluid strokes describe the pasture, foliage and sky. Rather than striving for photographic exactitude, the artist focuses on presence, stance and conformation, achieving a compelling mixture of realism and rustic charm. The painting clearly belongs to the British provincial livestock portrait tradition, often described as “primitive” or “naïve”, a quality now much appreciated by collectors of folk and rural art. Attribution:- In the Manner of William Ward The work is unsigned, but the subject, format and handling are closely in line with paintings executed in the manner of William Ward and with the broader group of British livestock painters who recorded prize cattle, horses and sheep for breeders and landowners. While it is not presented as a signed Ward, it clearly follows that visual tradition within the British School of agricultural portraiture, making it an attractive acquisition for collectors of rural, farming and animal art. Provenance & Exhibition:- Painted on a French 8F (46cm × 38cm) trade canvas and stretcher, the work carries a “Marque Déposée” B-in-lozenge maker’s label and stamp on the reverse, consistent with late 19th Century manufacture. Provenance:- Private collection Subsequently sold through the respected auction house Golding Young & Mawer Later in the collection of Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD Exhibited at the Famous Lord Hill Museum, Shropshire, in a display devoted to British rural and agricultural heritage Frame:- The work is presented in a later decorative gilt frame with moulded ornament, offering the classic Victorian country-house appearance. The gilded surface shows typical signs of age, including light rubbing, small chips and minor losses on the raised details, together with some accumulated dust in the recesses. These features contribute to its period charm rather than detracting from it. The frame is secure, suits the painting well, and is fitted with a hanging cord so it can be placed straight on the wall. Historical Context & Collecting Interest – Shorthorn & Livestock Portraiture:- The Shorthorn is one of the major British cattle breeds, developed in the late 18th and 19th centuries in northern England and southern Scotland. It played a key role in the story of “improved” livestock during the Agricultural Revolution, valued for both beef and milk and widely exported overseas. In the 19th Century, landowners and breeders often commissioned portraits of their best animals to commemorate prize-winners at agricultural shows and to record important bloodlines. These pictures typically hung in country houses, estate offices and agricultural club rooms, serving as both status symbols and visual breeding records. By the 20th century, such works came to be recognised not only as agricultural documents but also as engaging pieces of folk and naïve art. They are now collected by museums of rural life and social history, by sporting- and animal-art connoisseurs, and by folk-art enthusiasts who value their direct, characterful style. This example is very much in that tradition: a decorative yet historically evocative survivor from Britain’s agricultural past, capturing the pride, ambition and prestige associated with the Shorthorn breed. Why You’ll Love It: Genuine 19th Century oil on canvas livestock portrait in the British Naïve School, executed in the manner of William Ward and other provincial prize-animal painters. Warm, pastoral colour palette and a strong, engaging portrayal of a Shorthorn bull Professionally conserved by a museum-based fine art conservator (M.A.) Notable provenance, including sale through Golding Young & Mawer and exhibition at the Famous Lord Hill Museum Ready to hang – an excellent statement piece for a kitchen, study, office or country-style interior
