Description
Scottish Angling Oil Painting of Brown Trout from Culroy Burn by James B. Russell, c.1914 A fine and characterful Scottish sporting oil painting dating from the Edwardian period, depicting two freshly caught brown trout tipped from a wicker creel onto the grassy bank of Culroy Burn, Ayrshire. Painted circa 1914, this work combines strong decorative appeal with clear regional and historical interest, making it well suited to collectors of Scottish art, sporting pictures, and traditional country house interiors. Medium and Date Oil on canvas, early 20th century (circa 1914). Description and Composition The composition shows two brown trout arranged diagonally across the foreground, creating a natural sense of depth and movement. Russell carefully renders the fish with close attention to detail: silvery bellies, spotted flanks, and subtle tonal transitions that convey texture and weight. In contrast, the wicker creel, riverbank, and wooded background are painted more loosely, providing atmosphere while allowing the trout to remain the clear focus of the scene. A shaded burn and woodland backdrop complete the classic Scottish angling setting. Subject and Location The painting records a typical angling catch from Culroy Burn, a tributary of the River Doon near Minishant in South Ayrshire. The named burn adds authenticity and regional specificity, particularly appealing to collectors interested in Ayrshire sporting estates and traditional trout fishing scenes. Artist James B. Russell (1867–1956) was born in Edinburgh and grew up within a family tradition of specialist fish painting. His father, John Bucknell Russell, was an established carver and painter of salmon, producing highly accurate life-size works for wealthy sporting patrons. James continued this tradition into the Edwardian period, often combining finely observed fish with more atmospheric landscape settings. His works are increasingly sought after for their authenticity and strong connection to Scottish sporting life. Signature Signed “J. B. Russell” in red to the lower corner. The subject matter, handling, and circa-1914 date support attribution to James rather than his father, who used the same initials. Dimensions (Framed) 45.5 cm high × 55.5 cm wide × 6 cm deep. Frame Presented in a moulded gilt frame bearing the trade label Weir & Clyde, Carvers & Gilders, 463 Eglinton Street, Glasgow. The original Glasgow framing supports the early 20th-century date and adds period authenticity. Provenance Private collection, UK Weir & Clyde gilder’s label to the reverse Art dealer in Leominster Curated by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD Collectability and Interior Appeal This painting offers a classic Scottish sporting subject with a clearly identified river location and strong decorative presence. The combination of trout, creel, and wooded burn makes it ideal for display in country houses, sporting lodges, libraries, or traditional interiors. Works securely attributed to James B. Russell are relatively scarce, enhancing its appeal to collectors of Scottish and British sporting art.
